After one of the most adventurous drives of our lives through the dense forests of Chakrata to the remote village of Tipri — nestled deep in the Shivalik Himalayan ranges — we finally checked into the Tipri Chaani Homestay. Hungry, cold, and completely in awe of the surroundings, our host Satyam Bhaiya welcomed us with steaming hot tea and fresh sandwiches. What started as a cold breeze at 12°C quickly turned into something fierce. Strong Himalayan winds ripped through the valley, followed by one of the most dramatic hailstorms we've ever witnessed. Lightning cracked across the ridgeline, hail pounded the roof, electricity vanished, and the temperature dropped to a bone-chilling 8°C. We were completely cut off from the world — and honestly? It was one of the most beautiful nights of our lives. About Tipri, Chakrata — A Hidden Gem in the Shivaliks Chakrata is one of Uttarakhand's best-kept secrets — a quiet cantonment town perched at 7,000 feet in the Dehradun district, largely untouched by mass tourism. But venture an hour deeper into the forest from Chakrata, and you reach Tipri — a tiny Jaunsari village cradled in the lap of the lower Himalayas, where the air is pure, the skies are ink-dark with stars, and time moves slower. The people here belong to the Jaunsar-Bawar region, one of the most ethnically and culturally distinct communities in Uttarakhand. The Jaunsari people follow ancient customs, speak their own dialect, and carry traditions that date back centuries — including polyandry practices, unique folk music, and a deep-rooted connection with the land and the mountains. Sitting with these incredible people over a home-cooked Pahadi meal of Kadhi Chawal, Paneer, and Roti, hearing their stories of mountain life, and understanding what a "Chaani" truly is — a seasonal highland shelter used by Pahadi families during grazing months — was a cultural immersion we didn't expect but will never forget. Tipri and Chakrata sit within the Shivalik range, offering panoramic views of rolling forested ridges, deep gorges carved by the Tons River, and on clear mornings, distant snow-capped peaks. Birdwatchers, trekkers, offbeat travellers, and anyone seeking a digital detox from city chaos — this place is made for you. After the storm passed around 7 PM, the sky cracked open into something breathtaking. The electricity returned, Satyam Bhaiya brewed another round of hot tea, and we stepped outside to find a completely washed, glistening Himalayan world under a sky full of stars.
