THE POSITIONS OF FISIKALI AND EDEKABITEN WITHIN THE MAROON ADMINISTRATIVE TRADITION For some time now, I have been inundated with questions, especially from people from Suriname, about what a Fisikali and an Edekabiten is. And whether the Fisikali and the Edekabiten are the boss of the other Kabiten. There are all sorts of wild stories about this. They are stories spread by the so-called experts on the history of the Okanisi Maroons, when they are not. Misinformation and misleading information is spread about this item. On 11 July last, there was an interview in the television programme De Nieuwe Politiek (The New Politics), where someone claimed that the function of Fisikali started in the Tapanahoni area and then spread to the Cottica area. And that the current Gaanman of the Okanisi Maroons cannot wear his official Gaanman uniform because the Gaanman is never allowed to wear his official uniform without his Fisikali by his side. This is, of course, utter nonsense. In this video documentary, I explain how and when the positions of Fisikali and Edekabiten were created in Maroon societies. DE FUNCTIES VAN FISIKALI EN EDEKABITEN BINNEN DE MARRON BESTUURTRADITIE Sinds geruime tijd word ik overspoeld met vragen van vooral mensen uit Suriname, wat een Fisikali is en wat een Edekabiten. En of de Fisikali en de Edekabiten de baas zijn van de andere Kabiten. Er bestaan hierover allerlei wilde verhalen. Het zijn verhalen die verspreid worden door zogenaamde experts op het gebied van de geschiedenis van de Okanisi Marrons, terwijl zij dat niet zijn. Er wordt dus verkeerde en misleidende informatie verspreid over dit onderwerp. Op 11 juli jl. kon men in het Surinaamse televisieprogramma De Nieuwe Politiek een interview beluisteren, waarin iemand beweerde dat het fisikalischap aan de Tapanahoni begon en daarna overgewaaid is naar het Cotticagebied. En dat de huidige Gaanman van de Okanisi Marrons zijn officiële Gaanman-uniform niet kan dragen omdat de Gaanman nooit zijn officiële uniform mag dragen zonder zijn Fisikali aan zijn zijde. Dit is natuurlijk klinkklare onzin. In deze videodocumentaire leg ik uit hoe de functies van Fisikali en Edekabiten zijn ontstaan en wanneer.
