He stands tall as one of the best in the world of Urdu poetry. Life dealt him a harsh blow with his father’s passing in 1935, forcing him to abandon his education and try his hand at small businesses before finding his true calling in poetry. Without any family tradition of sher-o-shayari, Qateel’s poetic journey began under the guidance of Hakeem Yahya Shifa Khanpuri, whose name inspired part of his takhallus (pen name), Shifai. Later, he became a disciple of Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi. Known for his lyrical ghazal and romantic geet, Qateel’s art is evident even in his nazm. Rising from his struggle as a lyricist in Lahore's film industry, he published 14 books, including Haryali, Guftugoo, Mutriba and Bargad.
