The Unit That Outraged Even the Nazis: Hitler's "Russian" Brigade

The events that unfolded in Warsaw’s Ochota district during the summer of 1944 remain among the most tragic chapters of the Warsaw Uprising and the German occupation of Poland. After nearly five years of occupation, the Polish Home Army launched an uprising on 1 August 1944 in an effort to liberate the capital before the arrival of Soviet forces. What followed was a fierce struggle that would transform large parts of Warsaw into a battlefield and expose civilians to immense suffering. As German authorities sought to suppress the uprising, they deployed a mixture of regular military formations, SS units, and collaborationist forces. Among them was the RONA Brigade, commanded by Bronislav Kaminski and recruited largely from German-occupied Soviet territories. Sent into Warsaw’s Ochota district, the unit quickly became associated with widespread violence against the civilian population. Homes were looted and destroyed, residents were driven from their properties, and thousands of people were forced into the improvised Zieleniak transit camp, where conditions rapidly deteriorated. This documentary examines the experiences of civilians trapped in Ochota during August 1944 and explores how the district became one of the most heavily affected areas of the uprising. It follows the actions of the RONA Brigade, the destruction of hospitals and residential areas, and the suffering endured by ordinary men, women, and children caught in the conflict. The film also places these events within the broader context of the Warsaw Uprising, German occupation policy, and the struggle for Poland’s future during the final phase of the Second World War. Drawing on eyewitness testimony, wartime documents, and historical research, this documentary tells the story of Ochota 1944 and the people who lived through one of the most devastating episodes in Warsaw’s wartime history. It also examines the post-war fate of key figures connected to these events and the lasting legacy they left behind in Poland’s collective memory.
