Radeon HD 4770: Less is More

Mid 2008 saw ATI’s HD 4000 series taking the mid-range GPU market by storm with the HD 4870 and 4850. The beating heart of both was the RV770 core, which featured over double the functional units of their previous chip and fixed some of its biggest flaws. And at 300 and 200 USD respectively, these cards offered some of the best performance per dollar around. But ATI wasn't done yet; within the next year we got two new GPUs. The first of these was RV790, arriving in the HD 4890. This chip was an RV770 that was tweaked and optimized to support higher clock speeds, while also shipping with more memory. Besides these incremental improvements though, it didn't bring anything actually new to the table. The second was a little entry level core that would show the world a glimpse of what the soon to debut HD 5000 series had in store for them.
