Join Me On A Historical 1980s Journey In The Class 20 "Chopper", Running Along Part Of The West Coast Mainline And Two Freight-Only Branches From Bickershaw Colliery To Fiddlers Ferry Power Station. This Run Recreates The Merry-Go Round Workings From The Pit To The Power Station, A Working That Was Carried Out Back And Forth All Day, Everyday. Starting At Bickershaw With A Freshly Loaded Coal Train, Our Top And Tailed Working Makes The Roughly 3 Mile Journey Down To The West Coast Mainline, Joining At Wigan Springs Branch Diesel Depot. One Set Of Class 20s Then Uncouple And Return To Springs Branch Depot, These Are Only Necessary Given The Fact That Bickershaw Doesn't Have A Run Around Loop. After Changing Ends, We Take The Heavy Train 10 Miles Down The Mainline, Passing Under The Chat Moss Line At Newton-Le-Willows And Onwards To Warrington Bank Quay. From Here, The Train Pulls Off The Mainline And Stables In A Siding At Arpley. Next Follows The Unique Operation Where A Class 08 Reverses The Train For A Mile Through Arpley Yard And Around The Corner To Latchford Sidings, Ready To Head Down To Fiddlers Ferry. The Two Class 20s Then Set Out On The Branch, Passing Directly Underneath Warrington Bank Quay Station This Time, And Along An Industrial Line Down To The Power Station. On Arrival To Fiddlers Ferry, The Train Passes Round A Loop Before Using The Slow Speed Control To Slowly Pass Through The Unloader. Dropping Off The Coal From The Coal Hoppers Takes A While, So A Time Stamp Is Provided In The Video To Skip The Wait Should You Wish To. After The Coal Has Been Released From The Bottom Of Each Hopper, The Train Of Empties Pulls Up To The Departure Line Ahead Of The Signal Box And Awaits Clearance To Head Back Towards Bickershaw To Pick Up More Coal And Continue The Merry-Go Round.
