To catch this railroad on the move in summer daylight is truly a challenge. Extensive work windows during the summer months are necessary to get urgent maintenance done: This railroad operates in the Rocky Mountains in Montana, where heavy snowfalls in winter can make track work difficult. Furthermore, Montana Rail Link handles a lot of BNSF traffic, but runs only few own trains. The most famous is the "gas local", which commutes on a daily schedule between Thompson Falls and Missoula to fill a gap in a gas pipeline. Anticipating to meet the morning eastbound, I followed MRL's 10th subdivision west out of Missoula and was nonetheless surprised to actually bump into him. This beautiful area, the awesome weather, and state road MT-200 running parallel with the track invited for an extended chase east, which was great fun. It made up for the hassle the day before, when I filmed the "Logan local" kicking cars in heavy downpour (which is also in the video). However, the highlight is an MRL work train with caboose I caught near Paradise, MT. All power you'll get to see in this video is EMD made, from 50+ year-old GP35 to modern SD70ACe type locomotives..
