In September 1944 operations to secure the Allies supply line into the port of Antwerp take a back seat while Operation Market Garden, the daring airborne mission to capture bridges over the Rhine in the Netherlands and secure a route into Germany, is put into action. But despite the heroic stand made by a few hundred British airborne at one end of the Bridge at Arnhem, the Allies face their first defeat since landing Normandy. Market Garden is abandoned, and taking out German defences on the the Scheldt Estuary becomes the key battle for Canadian and British troops in October and into November. The Allies now face Germany’s defence in depth on the border, rapidly renovated in the face of the advance. The Siegfried Line or Westwall was a connected series of defences, and Allied troops encounter mine fields and booby traps and heavy fire from artillery, machine guns and mortars.
