Guia Completo - Trilha do MORRO DO COUTO - Parque Nacional do Itatiaia.

Morro do Couto, at 2680 meters high, is the 8th highest mountain in Brazil and the 2nd highest in the Upper Part of Itatiaia National Park, second only to Agulhas Negras. The trail to Morro do Couto is considered easy to moderate, totaling 6 km in distance, and can be completed in an average of 3 to 5 hours depending on the pace. A great option for those who want to take their first steps in mountaineering and hiking, it includes a short section of scrambling on boulders before reaching its summit, which offers a panoramic view of the Upper Part of the park, the Paraíba Valley, Serra Fina, Serra da Bocaina, and southern Minas Gerais. To reach the Upper or Plateau part of the park, take the exit from the Presidente Dutra Highway in Engenheiro Passos (exit 330 A), continuing for another 26km on BR-354 to Garganta do Registro (Minas Gerais – Rio de Janeiro border). After this access point, there are another 14km of dirt road, along the Rodovia das Flores, to Posto Marcão, which provides access to the main attractions of the Upper or Plateau part. From Belo Horizonte, use the Fernão Dias Highway and BR-381, passing through Caxambu and continuing on BR-354 to Garganta do Registro to reach the Upper or Plateau part. In December 2025, the full entrance fee was R$46.00 and parking for cars was R$35.00 and for motorcycles R$15.00.
