China is considered the world's largest gold market. Approximately 163 tonnes of gold were imported there in May. Looking at the figures from January to May 2026, China has imported a total of 692 tonnes of gold. Most strikingly, this figure is 76% higher than the same period last year (2025). In other words, the pace of China's gold buying has surged dramatically in just one year. Now, the question arises: why did this happen? According to a Bloomberg report, the demand for gold bars in China has risen sharply. Additionally, ordinary people are increasingly investing in gold accumulation schemes. Put simply, the Chinese people view gold as a safer investment than keeping money in banks. And when millions of people start thinking this way, a rise in demand is inevitable. There is another interesting point here. At the beginning of 2026, gold prices had neared record highs, but subsequently, prices dropped by about 25%. That is precisely when China seized the opportunity. Just as people in India increase their purchases when gold becomes cheaper, people and businesses in China also capitalized on the lower prices to ramp up buying. According to Ray Jia, Head of China Research at the World Gold Council (WGC), China's gold imports remained robust in April as well. China's net gold imports in April stood at 157 tonnes—10% higher than in March and 40% higher than the previous year. In essence, the surge that began in April gained even more momentum in May.
