I went to see the daytime maintenance work on the JR East Keihin-Tohoku Line in May. The section was between Tabata Station and Tamachi Station. Normally, this work is concentrated at night, but this time it started around 10:30 AM. The reasons given were work-style reform, increased efficiency of maintenance work, and the ability to secure longer working hours than at night. During the construction period, express train service on the Keihin-Tohoku and Negishi Lines was suspended, and trains ran on the Yamanote Line tracks. Both the Yamanote Line and the Keihin-Tohoku/Negishi Line operated with their usual train frequencies. While Yamanote Line trains arrive every 4-5 minutes during the day, the Keihin-Tohoku Line trains were arriving at intervals of about 2 minutes depending on the time of day due to the Keihin-Tohoku Line trains also using the Yamanote Line tracks. It was an unusual sight to see a Keihin-Tohoku Line train on a Yamanote Line platform. Station staff announcements were constantly playing, but some people might have been a little confused. The automated announcements also changed the platform numbers. The actual construction work was interesting, as we were able to see some of it up close from the platform. During this construction, announcements were repeatedly made not only inside the trains but also at the station regarding the change of the Keihin-Tohoku Line platform to the Yamanote Line side. Even though the train platforms were different, it was on the opposite side of the same platform, and I didn't see any major problems or confusion.
