Japanese Generals Were Shattered After the Leyte Massacre Cost Japan 79,000 Men in Days One tropical island. One doomed Japanese army. And a battle Tokyo knew could not be won. SUMMARY This documentary tells the story of the Battle of Leyte — the campaign that broke the Japanese Empire in the Philippines and helped give birth to the kamikaze. In October 1944, more than 700 American ships appeared off Leyte. Battleships, carriers, destroyers, landing craft, transport ships, and tankers filled the horizon as General Douglas MacArthur returned to the Philippines with the U.S. Sixth Army. For the Japanese soldiers waiting on the beaches, it was supposed to be the decisive battle. But their own commander, General Tomoyuki Yamashita, already knew the truth. Leyte could not be defended. Yamashita argued that the decisive fight should be made on Luzon, where Japan had better terrain, stronger defensive depth, and a chance to inflict a long campaign on the Americans. Tokyo rejected him. Field Marshal Hisaichi Terauchi ordered Leyte to be reinforced anyway. The result was catastrophe. Japanese convoys were sunk before they reached shore. Reinforcements arrived without food, artillery, ammunition, or medical supplies. In the mountains, Japanese units starved. Disease spread. Men ate roots, grass, coconuts, and anything they could find to stay alive. At sea, Operation Shō-Gō collapsed. Musashi was sunk in the Sibuyan Sea. Nishimura’s southern force was destroyed in Surigao Strait. Kurita reached Samar, faced Taffy 3, and turned away. Ozawa’s carrier decoy succeeded — but it no longer mattered. Then came the kamikaze. Vice Admiral Takijirō Ōnishi formed the first organized Special Attack Units. Lieutenant Yukio Seki led one of the first successful kamikaze strikes, sinking USS St. Lo off Samar. But even that could not save Leyte. By Christmas 1944, Yamashita informed the remaining Japanese forces that no more supplies, reinforcements, or support would come. Around 20,000 men were still alive. Most were never told they had been abandoned. This is the story of Leyte — where Japan sent nearly 80,000 men into a battle their own commanders knew was already lost.
