Why Japanese Admirals Deadliest Trap Failed to Stop Spruance Powerful Carrier Fleet

Why Japanese Admirals Deadliest Trap Failed to Stop Spruance Powerful Carrier Fleet One quiet admiral. One Japanese carrier trap. And one decision every aviator thought was wrong. SUMMARY This documentary tells the story of Admiral Raymond A. Spruance and the decision that shaped the Battle of the Philippine Sea. On June 18, 1944, more than 125,000 American Marines and soldiers were fighting on Saipan. Three hundred and fifty-five miles to the west, Vice Admiral Jisaburo Ozawa was bringing the largest Japanese carrier force since Pearl Harbor toward the invasion beaches. Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher wanted to take Task Force 58 west through the night and strike the Japanese carriers at dawn. Every aviator understood the chance. Every officer expected Spruance to say yes. He said no. Spruance believed the Japanese might attempt an “end run” — using one carrier force as bait while another group slipped around the flank to destroy the exposed invasion shipping. His mission was not to chase glory. His mission was to protect Saipan. Ozawa’s plan depended on Spruance doing exactly what a carrier admiral was expected to do: chase the Japanese fleet. Instead, Spruance stayed in position. He turned Task Force 58 into a wall. On June 19, Japanese aircraft came east in waves. American radar saw them coming. Fighter directors placed F6F Hellcats above them. The result became known as the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. Hundreds of Japanese aircraft were destroyed, and Japan’s carrier air power was broken. American submarines Albacore and Cavalla added to the disaster, striking Taiho and Shokaku. The next day, Mitscher launched a long-range dusk attack that sank Hiyo and damaged more Japanese ships, then lit up the fleet at night so his lost pilots could find their way home. Spruance was criticized for not pursuing harder. Admiral John Towers even demanded that he be relieved. But months later at Leyte Gulf, Halsey chased Ozawa’s empty carrier bait and left the invasion force exposed — proving the exact danger Spruance had refused to risk. This is not just the story of a naval battle. It is the story of a commander who chose duty over glory, and proved that being right is not the same thing as being celebrated.
