Greater Anglia Trains at Needham Market on December 15th 2023

1st visit to Needham Market on the Great Eastern Main Line Featuring services from Greater Anglia and some freight When the station opened in 1846 it was know as Needham opened at the time by the Ipswich & Bury Railway The former station building was designed by Frederick Barnes and Daniel Rivitt which was described at the time as One of the best in East Anglia. The Platforms themselves were later rebuilt by the former LNER. It was closed in highly controversial circumstances by Beeching Axe in 1967 however it was reopened as Needham Market 4 years later in 1971. The former main building was restored in 2000 and is being alternatively used today which received an award at the National Heirtage Awards in 2002 and recently appeared in a Book of 100 Best Station in Britain by Sir Simon Jenkins. Today the station is served by hourly services to and from Cambridge via Newmarket which the platforms themselves are just long enough to accommodate 4 car Class 755 Flirts. Passing trains to and from Peterborough via Ely like Cambridge services terminate at Ipswich although occasionally 1 or 2 trains a day can continue onwards to Harwich International Passengers for London must change at Ipswich for a connection on a Class 745 Flirt which is the main intercity fleet or a Class 720 which is an hourly stopper to and from London Liverpool Street. In recent months due to high demand Class 755s being coupled together are now being used on the GEML for services from London to Norwich as well as the other regional routes to and from Ipswich as well as to and from Norwich.
