Common Loons

These are one of my most favourite waterfowl species. The Common non is far from common or ordinary and their striking black and white plumage and iridescent feathers around their head and neck, combined with their striking fiery red eyes are a sight to behold. However it is their song or call that stands out to me. It epitomizes the essence of the wilderness like a wolf howl. I got to spend a bit of time with a nesting pair and captured these images. I used a float tube normally reserved for fly fishing small lakes and was able to get down low and eye level with the subject. The entire time I was worried I'd get a puncture and be unable to swim holding my camera and lens above my head swimming with one free arm. I hope you enjoy.
