The geology of Iceland for everyone Part 7B The Reykjanes Peninsula

This is the second part of my discussion of the geology of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Here I discuss the (so far) 8 eruptions of the Sundhnúkur fissure and the associated multiple feeder-dike, the potential magma chamber beneath Svartsengi, and the graben in the mountain Þorbjörn. I also discuss the 800-year-old Eldvörp volcanic fissure, structures seen at the southwestern end of the peninsula (Reykjanestá), including the dikes associated with the Yngri-Stampar volcanic fissure, and finally the ´bridge between two continents´, a large tension fracture.
