Geology of Iceland for Everyone Part 9 From Mýrdalsjökull to Öræfajökull
This video is primarily on the very large eruptions of Eldgjá (934 or 939) and Laki (1783) and the associated structures, such as grabens, crater cones, and the lava fields. In addition, I describe the canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur, the large sandur plains (and how they are maintained), the 1996 Gjálp eruption in the ice cap of Vatnajökull – and the resulting large flood. Also discussed are Dverghamrar (the Dwarf cliffs), the highest cliff face in Iceland (at Lómagnúpur), and the nearby ice caps and glaciers.
