This Weekend Took a Very Unexpected Turn…

Brits in Australia spend a jam-packed weekend across the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, from cafés and Hijinx Hotel to watching England reach the World Cup semi-finals. We start Friday with breakfast at Hey Day in the Kawana area, trying smashed avocado, a kimchi and cheese toastie, pain au chocolat, a mocha and a hot matcha. Afterwards, we walk along the coastal path towards Bokarina and stop at Wallace & Wood for a Kinder Bueno ice cream. Saturday begins in Coolum, where we unexpectedly bump into friends and have breakfast together at Alley Cat Café. After a quick stop at Ghanda and a cuddle with Holly and Shannon’s cat Snowball, we travel down to Brisbane for the evening. We arrive in Fortitude Valley and try the loaded fries, empanadas and fish tacos at La Bodega before heading to the Prison Island Experience. Unfortunately, we didn’t pre-book and the next session wasn’t available until 8:30pm, so we quickly needed a new plan. That backup plan takes us to Hijinx Hotel in Chermside, where we compete in human-sized Tetris, basketball, carnival games and plenty of other challenge rooms. We finish the night with drinks and a pretzel at The Bavarian. Sunday starts at 6:00am as we head to Diana’s house to watch England play Norway in the World Cup quarter-final. Diana surprises us with England decorations and breakfast burgers before a dramatic match sees England win 2–1 and qualify for the semi-finals. We finish the weekend with pancakes, tea and a peaceful local bush walk with Picco.
