Do you live in a shared apartment building or an apartment building and need to mute your trumpet for practice? Then you can't avoid using a suitable practice mute. But which of these mutes is right for you? With a practice mute, you can significantly dampen your instrument. Unfortunately, muting also changes the feel of playing. By "blocking" the tube, the airflow changes, and you blow against greater resistance. Unfortunately, we don't give in to this new state, but intuitively work against it. We want to achieve our sound, our usual playing feel, and also our intuition, and blow with more air and significantly more effort – this results in faster muscle fatigue, and we wear ourselves out more quickly. So, for me, a practice mute isn't an ideal solution. A trumpet colleague had the idea of ​​playing into an open wardrobe to dampen the sound. A wonderful idea. Unfortunately, we then had a problem with the music stand. My idea: A combination of mute and wardrobe. Here's my life hack: Simply take your cup mute, stuff a cloth into the cup (i.e., place a cloth in the cup around the straight mute), put the new practice mute on your trumpet, and practice. This idea allows you to mute your trumpet and have a lighter playing feel than with a regular practice mute. Disadvantage: The cup mute with a cloth is heavier than a practice mute. Advantage: Better response, better intonation, and the same level of damping. I measured it! Both mutes are in the range of 76-79 dB, so they're identical!
