What do you have to pay attention to when practicing with a practice damper? There are various practice mutes from different manufacturers, such as Dennis Wick, shhht mute, silent brass, etc. I have tried various of these practice mutes over the past few weeks and came to the conclusion that unfortunately you always have to make a compromise. The speech, the intonation, the playing behavior changes. In short, as soon as you put something into the funnel of brass instruments, something changes, that means you always make a compromise. I came to the conclusion that the Dennis Wick Cupmute with an additional cloth in the cup is the best solution. This combination mutes the trumpet to 70-75 decibels, just like the other practice mutes. But the advantage is: better response, better intonation, better sound, low, middle and high register are playable. Sounds too good to be true!
