For others, Augustine of Hippo should be considered the first modern idealist, whose work is said to have influenced many other philosophers in the Modern Age. However, there are those who defend the idealism present in Descartes, Malebranche, and other authors of Continental Rationalism, in opposition to British Empiricism, with the exception, of course, of the British empiricist philosopher Berkeley, for whom it would not be possible to deny idealism. In Kant, we have a form of idealism, but this maintains the thing-in-itself, the noumenon, which allows him to be understood as a moderate realist. Hence, his Transcendental Idealism is essentially different from German Idealism, which we will later see in authors who will consider the noumenon something superfluous and useless and removed it from their philosophies, as is the case with Fichte, Schelling, Schleiermacher, and Hegel, whom we will discuss here. These, and other authors, distance themselves from Kant's Transcendental Idealism, among other reasons, because Kant is a philosopher immersed in the culture stemming from the Enlightenment, while these other philosophers already belong to a new movement, Romanticism. German Idealism is characterized by its pursuit of a philosophy where there is total identity between subject and object, by valuing consciousness and nature, and by attempting to overcome dualism. The concept of Geist (in German), which can be translated as consciousness, mind, or Spirit, is fundamental to the philosophy of German Idealism in its search for monism. The idea of ​​the "absolute" and how this idea develops among the various thinkers who comprise the movement is very important.
