This Scottish Mariner & Privateer Inspired The Greatest Castaway Story Ever Told

Today we're going to Lower Largo — a tiny coastal fishing village in Fife that inspired one of the greatest Castaway stories ever told. We'll take the ScotRail service from Edinburgh Waverley to Leven - crossing the Forth Bridge and along the Fife coast. Then the No 95 bus from Leven straight into Lower Largo. Worth knowing: the Leven line was closed by Beeching in the 1960s. It only reopened in June 2024. So this is a very newly possible day trip. In Lower Largo, we'll find: ➡️ The birthplace of the real man who inspired one of the most famous Castaway novels ever written — and why he ended up alone in the Pacific Ocean for four years and four months ➡️ The Grade B listed railway viaduct — built in 1857 by an engineer who was sacked from the project, and what he went on to build next ➡️ Visit The Railway Inn for a £4.60 pint - the correct price for a pint of beer ➡️ Lower Largo's wee harbour, the beach, 00:00 Welcome to Edinburgh Waverley Station - Let's get a train to Leven 00:44 Edinburgh to Leven - A Clever FIRST CLASS Trick on ScotRail 02:39 Leven Beach & Promenade and No 95 Bus to Lower Largo 04:39 Why we're here - the Crusoe Hotel gives it away 05:08 Lower Largo Pier, Harbour, Pubs and High Street 07:52 The Story of Alexander Selkirk and Robinson Crusoe 09:53 The Story of the Lower Largo Viaduct and Thomas Bouch 11:32 Pint in The Railway Inn Pub 12:22 What did you think of Lower Largo? #LowerLargo #Fife #RobinsonCrusoe #Leven #ScotRail #LowerLargoScotland #Scotland If you enjoyed this video please subscribe to my YouTube Channel - it's totally free:    / @rogedwardstv   Instagram:   / rogeraedwards   LinkedIn:   / rogeraedwards   Music: https://www.epidemicsound.com
