In this video, we tell you the story of Thoppi Amma, a messiah or spiritual leader who is causing a stir in southern India. Topi, in Tamil, means cap or hat, and Amma means mother. Every day, Topi Amma walks alone the 14-kilometer Grivalam, which is something like a miniature Camino de Santiago in the Indian city of Tiruvannamalai. No one knows exactly how the legend of Toppi Amma began, but locals attribute mystical powers to the woman and believe her to be a bringer of good fortune. Shops invite her to food and drinks, convinced that their business will prosper after Thoppi Amma's visit. The woman does NOT welcome everyone, and sometimes, she is even capable of physical harm. But no one dares to cough at Toppi Amma. Recently, Toppi Amma's popularity exploded through Instagram and YouTube videos that have racked up hundreds of thousands of views. In some cases, millions, with the comments section filled with messages like "TA is the mother of our desires," "The life of Siddhas is a mysterious and wonderful journey." But also: "She is not a shiddar. Don't follow her or create more hype!" The word SIDDHA, or Shiddar, is constantly repeated in almost all of TA's English-language video titles. If we go to Wikipedia, we will see that a siddha, within the framework of Hinduism and Jainism, is "someone who has achieved it" and who "has reached a high degree of physical perfection and also spiritual enlightenment." According to some YouTubers who follow Thoppi Amma, Siddhas couldn't care less about her appearance or her clothes. But for someone so famous on the internet, there aren't many websites with information about who Toppi Amma is. On a Tamil news website, I discovered that "Hat Amma's real name is Palaniammal, known as the walking Siddha woman of Tiruvannamalai. She lived in Bangalore 18 years ago. When her brother died suddenly there, she couldn't bear it and came to Tiruvannamalai without telling anyone, took refuge there, and started performing girivalam. Palaniammal's daughter said that 18 years later, her family learned about her through a video posted on social media." Everyone who follows her is convinced she's a Sidha. You're probably suspecting something: this whole story is a scam. Lies and religion? But when has a religion ever been based on unfounded facts? Seriously, though, it seems unlikely she's a messiah. However, we're not talking about a scam either. I've watched too many videos about the woman, and if this is a scam, Toppi Amma certainly isn't seeing it. The answer to this whole thing is a little sadder. The irony of this story (or cruelty) is that this woman from India is almost certainly unaware of what's going on. It seems pretty obvious that Toppi Amma is a woman suffering from dementia, or at least some kind of mental health issue. She has a lot of followers because, well, that's how religions (and life) work: we need something to hold on to. Call me crazy, but it looks like the people behind many of these videos are just milking us. TA's image in exchange for a considerable number of clicks. In another country, social services would have already taken charge of doing something for this woman. In India, however, they've elevated her to the status of a prophet. A siddha. Toppi Ama, the involuntary messiah.
