UK Road Tours - A55 Chester to Holyhead

Today's road tour takes us along the A55, a major artery connecting Chester and the northwest of England with North Wales and Anglelsey. The road begins at the end of the M53 motorway near Chester and swings around the city before entering Wales and terminating at Holyhead, beside the ferry terminal. The road also passes St Asaph, Colwyn Bay, Conwy, and Bangor. The A55 was one of the original road numbers designated in the 1922 numbering, and began near Handbridge, at what is now the junction between the A483 and A5104. The A55 then followed today's A5104 along the south side of the River Dee to Broughton, and then along today's B5125 to Hawarden and Northop. The road also followed the A5026 through Holywell, A525 through St Asaph, A547 through Abergele, Colwyn Bay, and Conwy, and terminated at the A5 near Bangor. Even by 1975, only small sections near St Asaph, Abergele and east of Bangor had been upgraded to dual carriageway. Further upgrades ensued later, with the Anglesey section upgraded to dual carriageway in 2001, leaving only the converted Britannia Bridge and the final stub in Holyhead single carriageway along this route.
