U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping were expected to meet in Beijing at the end of March to build on the fragile trade truce their teams negotiated last October. Trump, however, requested a delay to manage the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The U.S. and China remain engaged in intense strategic competition amid growing geopolitical uncertainty. At the same time, both sides have shown a willingness to accommodate each other’s priorities. Where is the world’s most consequential bilateral relationship headed in 2026?
