Great Walk! Sunderland Point & Sambo's Grave

Join me as I embark on my first outing of the year and take in the enchanting coastal views of Sunderland Point. We start out from the free, Carr Lane Car Park near the village of Middleton, Lancashire. The coastal route is an easy and ideal walk for people of all ages and has plenty to offer. In the mid 1700's Sunderland was once a major port for ships going to and from the West Indies. The large vessels would unload cotton, sugar, rum, tobacco and timber here and it would be stored in Warehouses constructed along the coastline. Many of these still exist today and have been converted into private dwellings. Unfortunately, the area did play it's part in the Transatlantic Slave Trade of the era and Sunderland became the last resting place for one of these unfortunate souls. According to period accounts, in 1736 a young African Cabin Boy — referred to in historical sources as “Sambo” or “Samboo” — was put ashore at the Point by the crew of a ship. He became ill and, believing himself abandoned, died shortly afterwards. Being non-Christian, he was buried on unconsecrated ground on the western side of the peninsula.
