The village of Sunderland Point near Heysham, Lancashire is cut off from the mainland and is only accessible by a causeway which is covered during times of high tide. It is also known for the filming location of the ITV drama series The Bay which featured the village in series 5. But mostly the village, which is reached by car from Overton, was historically a very important ship building centre in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was also a port which was very important for the importation of sugar and cotton from the West Indies and North America and also the importation of humans as part of the slave trade. This video also features the grave of a black slave who was taken ill on the voyage to Sunderland Point and died in about 1737. Much later in about 1797 a grave and memorial was laid in memory of the poor unfortunate boy and was named Sambo's Grave. https://www.sunderlandpoint.net/sambo... N.B. Whilst here I cleared quite a lot of long grass that was covering the grave. I didn't have any tools so ripped it out with my hands. if you are planning visiting and have some scissors or gardening tools it would be wonderful if you could tend to the grave. 😉 -------- Chapters 0:00 - Intro 0:15 - Location Information 1:21 - Visitor Information 2:05 - Getting There 2:33 - Horizon Line Observatory 3:00 - The Grave 3:43 - Outro & Links --------
