Today, there are 7 active projects and production reaches 116,000 tons. The projection for 2033-2034 is to exceed 300,000 tons, which would place the country among the top two producers worldwide. ⛏️ From Zero to 20 Billion in Copper: Argentina currently exports virtually no copper. With seven world-class projects ready to begin construction, the country would produce between 1.4 and 1.5 billion tons annually, generating between US$18 billion and US$20 billion in exports and up to 130,000 direct and indirect jobs. 🌎 The RIGI and the Multinationals That Arrived: As soon as the RIGI was enacted, BHP finalized its merger with Lundin and announced the Vicuña project in San Juan. Glencore and Rio Tinto also confirmed copper projects. Legal certainty and the possibility of litigating abroad were the determining factors. ⚖️ The Law That Was No Longer Enforced: Argentina has had a sound mining investment law for 30 years. The problem: it was enforced until 2007, and then export taxes were imposed on projects that had guaranteed fiscal stability. That precedent deterred investors for over a decade and is the main risk to avoid repeating. 🏗️ Mining for 100 Years: Chile has mines that have been in production for 110 and 114 years. Argentina needs to think with that horizon in mind.
