Backpacking Point Reyes National Seashore: Sky Camp to Coast Camp to Wildcat Camp/Alamere Falls
We immediately jumped at the chance to backpack Point Reyes National Seashore when our good friend, Kevin, asked us to join him. We started out from the Bear Valley Visitors Center and made a short 4 mile/1k ft elevation climb to Sky Camp on day one. Day two took us down 1k ft and another 4 miles to the Coast Camp. Day Three was roughly 8 to 10 miles along the stunning coastal trail to Wildcat Camp where we were greeted by a heard of Elk, Ospreys and Northern Harriers after an 800 ft elevation gain and loss. We decided to take a side quest to the famous Alamere Falls (1 of 2 California waterfalls that empties into the ocean) for a quick rinse. We had an exceptional afternoon watching the nature channel from camp, we saw a newborn elk take its' very first steps!!!! Day Four was a bit of a cruiser with another 800 ft elevation climb out of Wildcat Camp and an 8 mile trek back to our cars at the Bear Valley Visitors Center. Overall, this is was an absolutely phenomenal early season backpacking trip to knock the rust off our bones and get refamiliarized with our gear. We would highly recommend this as a beginner backpacking trip for anyone. Each campsite has trash/recycling and pit toilets. Wildcat Camp is the hardest to get reservations, so start by getting an open camp there and build your itinerary around that.
