Graca, Lisbon - the city's most beautiful viewpoints, Monastery of São Vicente de Fora and Pantheon

We take a walking tour through the Graça district in Lisbon. First, we visit the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora and the National Pantheon of Portugal, housed in the former church of Santa Engrácia, both of which offer wonderful views of the city from their rooftop terraces. Then we continue to the Miradouro da Graça and the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, which are among Lisbon's most beautiful viewpoints. We end the day with an atmospheric Fado evening at the Fado restaurant "O Corrido". Originally a working-class neighborhood, Graça lies northeast of the castle on the highest of Lisbon's seven hills. We begin our tour at the Mosteiro de São Vicente de Fora, one of the most important Mannerist buildings in Portugal. Rebuilt in the 16th century under Philip I, the monastery impresses not only with its monumental facade but also houses one of the world's largest collections of Baroque azulejos tiles. The rooftop terrace alone is worth the visit! The view of the castle, the Tagus River, and the Pantheon is beautiful, and there are no crowds. We pass through the Arco Grande de Cima and arrive at Campo de Santa Clara, where the Feira da Ladra, Lisbon's oldest and most famous flea market, takes place on some days. Unfortunately, there's no market today, so we continue a few more steps to the Pantheon. The Panteão Nacional was originally planned as the Church of Santa Engrácia. The construction of this Baroque building spanned almost 300 years, which has even given the Portuguese language an idiom for seemingly endless projects. We explore the majestic interior beneath the enormous white dome, where important figures in Portuguese history, such as the Fado legend Amália Rodrigues and the explorer Vasco da Gama, are honored. From the Pantheon's viewing terrace, we enjoy a sweeping view of the old town and the Tagus River. We continue our ascent to the Miradouro da Graça, officially named after the poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. This viewpoint offers a classic perspective of São Jorge Castle and the Baixa district. We take a quick look inside the neighboring Igreja da Graça church and then continue on to the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. As the highest point in the Graça district, this viewpoint offers a fantastic panorama of the entire city, the iconic Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge, and the colossal Cristo Rei statue on the opposite bank of the Tagus River. To conclude the day, we visit the Fado restaurant "O Corrido," located right next to the Pantheon. The exact origins of Fado are not entirely clear; the songs of Portuguese sailors, African and Brazilian influences, and the Moorish heritage may all have played a role. The melancholic musical style originated in the early 19th century in the slums of Lisbon and is now considered the voice of the Portuguese soul. At "O Corrido", we enjoy a delicious Portuguese meal. Between the courses, the artists, the Fadistas, perform and sing about Saudade. It's about world-weariness in the broadest sense, about bittersweet feelings like longing, nostalgia, and lost love.
