Cristo Rei & Quinta da Arealva, Lisbon - fantastic views and an abandoned place with street art
We visit the monumental Cristo Rei (Christ the King) statue in Almada, opposite Lisbon, on the south bank of the Tagus River. From there, we have the best view of the Ponte 25 de Abril (25th of April Bridge) and enjoy a fantastic panorama stretching from Belém across the Tagus to Lisbon's historic city center. A short hike takes us to Quinta da Arealva, an abandoned place for urban explorers with colorful street art on its crumbling walls. We continue via Cais do Ginjal to Cacilhas. From there, the ferry takes us back to Lisbon. We take the public bus from Lisbon across the 25th of April Bridge to Almada on the other side of the Tagus. We can't miss our destination, the Santuário de Cristo Rei; the monumental Christ the King statue is visible from afar! This landmark of the Lisbon region, if not all of Portugal, stands 110 meters (361 ft) tall, arms outstretched, on a cliff high above the riverbank. Those who wish can climb to the viewing platform on the statue's base. We, however, save ourselves the wait in line and the entrance fee; the view from the free terrace is spectacular enough! Below us lies the striking Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge, connecting the two banks of the Tagus River. The view stretches far from Belém in the west to the center of Lisbon in the east. We watch the cruise ships as they make their way upstream to the port of Lisbon. A wonderful panorama that we can't get enough of! Afterwards, we leave the main tourist routes and take a path down the hillside toward the banks of the Tagus. Our destination is Quinta da Arealva. In the 19th century, this extensive estate was home to a major winery that shipped its wine from its own dock all over the world. But those days are long gone! Production ceased in the 20th century, and nature has reclaimed large parts of the grounds. Looting, vandalism, and a devastating fire left only crumbling ruins. In the 21st century, graffiti artists discovered the old walls and created a dynamic and anarchic street art gallery here. We venture inside the ruins, hoping nothing falls on our heads or the floor collapses beneath us! The colorful murals on the crumbling structures exude a morbid charm, and we discover true works of art among all the graffiti and murals. It's quite lonely here. Homeless people use the ruins as shelter, and a few anglers are on the dilapidated quay. From the ramshackle dock, we continue on to the abandoned Cais do Ginjal. After that, the area becomes more well-kept and lively again. We had originally planned to hike along the Tagus River to Cacilhas, where the ferry departs back to Lisbon. Unfortunately, the riverside path is closed, so we have to take the Elevador Panorâmico da Boca do Vento elevator up to Almada's upper town. At least the elevator's name doesn't overpromise; the view back towards Cristo Rei, Ponte 25 de Abril, Quinta da Arealva, and the Tagus River is truly beautiful! Finally, we reach Cacilhas and take the ferry back to Lisbon. And the crossing to Cais do Sodré in Lisbon is another lovely panoramic ride to end the day!
