Zagora Desert Ride 🇲🇦 | Sandstorm Chaos
In this vlog, I explore the desert town of Zagora, right on the edge of the Sahara in southern Morocco 🇲🇦 — and what starts as a calm, scenic ride quickly turns into something much more intense… Zagora has a long and fascinating history. For centuries, it was an important stop on ancient trans-Saharan caravan routes, where traders would travel by camel across the desert all the way to Timbuktu — a journey that could take around 52 days. Today, the town still holds onto that heritage, surrounded by palm groves, desert landscapes, and the vast Draa Valley. For this ride, I set out on a 30km loop through Zagora and beyond. Starting in town, I head north along the west side of the Draa River, before dropping down into the palm groves — known locally as the “palmerie.” From there, I weave through a maze of narrow dirt tracks, farming plots, and irrigation canals, completely away from traffic and deep in the greenery of the oasis. The Draa River, Morocco’s longest at around 1,100km, has shaped life here for generations. It feeds dozens of towns and villages along its valley, making agriculture possible in an otherwise harsh desert environment. But today, like much of the region, the river is dry — with water only flowing a few months of the year depending on rainfall and dam releases. Riding through the palmerie is a completely different world compared to the open desert. There are traditional mud-brick buildings, crumbling walls marking land boundaries, and small settlements tucked between the palm trees. Donkeys are still widely used here, helping transport goods — and even taking children to school. Eventually, I reach the far side of the oasis and cross over the dry riverbed, marking the halfway point of the ride. From here, I begin the return journey along the east side, riding through small Berber villages where life continues much as it has for generations. The people here live simply, relying on traditional farming methods and the land around them. But as the ride continues, the landscape begins to change. The greenery fades away, replaced by a wide, open desert — flat, dry, and stretching as far as the eye can see. And then, things take a turn… The wind suddenly picks up, and within minutes, I find myself riding straight into a sandstorm. Dust and sand are whipped into the air, reducing visibility and making it much harder to keep moving forward. What started as a peaceful ride quickly becomes a real challenge. With Jebel Zagora — the mountain overlooking the town — getting closer in the distance, I push on through the wind and sand, eventually rejoining the main road for the final stretch back. This ride was a perfect mix of history, culture, and raw desert conditions — a reminder of just how powerful and unpredictable this environment can be. ⸻ If you enjoyed the video, don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more cycling adventures from around the world 🌍🚴♂️ ⸻ #Morocco #Zagora #Cycling #DesertRide #Sahara #BikeVlog #AdventureTravel
