I Wasn’t Expecting THIS in Morocco…

📍 Monkey Fingers Canyon Hike | Dades Valley, Morocco 🇲🇦 Unfortunately this wasn’t a ride day… but sometimes the best adventures happen when you step off the bike. In this vlog, I explore one of Morocco’s most unique natural landscapes — the incredible Monkey Fingers Canyon, hidden in the Dades Valley in the High Atlas Mountains. Instead of cycling, I trade two wheels for two feet and head out on a hike and light jog through this amazing place. Starting from the small Berber village of Tamellalt, I walk through a lush oasis along the Dades River, passing palm trees, local farms, and traditional adobe houses. The contrast between the green valley and the dry, rocky mountains is beautiful and something I didn’t expect. Along the way, I even pick up a fluffy hiking companion — a friendly local dog who joins me for part of the journey! The hike begins along a dry riverbed that leads into the Monkey Fingers canyon. As I enter, the landscape completely changes. Huge rock formations rise up around me, shaped over thousands of years by wind and water. The canyon gets narrower and narrower, turning into a winding corridor just a meter wide in places. There are sections where I have to scramble over rocks, climb small ledges, and squeeze through tight gaps. It feels like a natural obstacle course and makes the whole experience even more fun and adventurous. The rock itself is fascinating. The canyon walls are made of soft limestone, and you can see layers, curves, and patterns that formed millions of years ago when this area was underwater. The colours change from pale beige to deep red, and the shapes almost look like they’ve been carved by hand. As I go deeper into the canyon, I pass huge boulders stuck between the walls, narrow passages, and open sections that look like they could become waterfalls in the rainy season. Around every corner, there’s something new to see. Eventually, I climb out of the canyon onto a higher plateau, where I get a completely different view of the landscape before looping back toward the village. This hike is around 3km through the canyon itself, but with the walk from Tamellalt and back, it makes for a really nice half-day adventure. ⚠️ If you’re planning to do this hike: Make sure to bring plenty of water, especially in the heat. The canyon can be physically demanding in places, with some climbing and scrambling required. Good shoes are definitely recommended! This might not have been a cycling day, but it turned out to be one of the most interesting and unexpected adventures of the trip.
