One of the most unfortunate trends in modern SpongeBob is the lack of character from SpongeBob and Patrick specifically. Despite being the two most prominent characters on the show, in recent years they have been reduced to nothing more than childish blank slates who go through the motions of whatever plot an episode has. Let's take a look at the episodes Kiss of the Nematode and Brainless Brawn and examine how SpongeBob is used in the former and Patrick is used in the latter and compare them to classic episodes like Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy and Valentine's Day in order to illustrate just how much these characters have deteriorated over the years.
