From the Taisho period to the early Showa period, Eiichi Shibusawa (Sokashisha) and Heihachiro Togo built villas, and Atami also became a strong hub for exchange between the political and financial worlds. After the war, group travel became more common, and Atami became a mass tourist destination, and its image as a villa area temporarily faded. However, during the bubble period of the 1980s, resort condominiums rapidly increased, and demand for villas increased again.
