Architecture thriving on the former red-light district/Walk around the nightlife districts, Atami Yurakucho Nagisacho Atami is a tourist resort hot spring city located at the base of the east coast of the Izu Peninsula. It was designated an international tourist hot spring cultural city in 1950. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces Sagami Bay to the east. The city area is formed in a stepped pattern from the coast to the mountainside. The old town area, which has been a hot spring town since the Edo period, is formed on a relatively flat area close to the coast where three rivers, Itokawa, Hatsukawa, and Wadagawa, flow from the east. On the other hand, Atami Station opened in 1925 (Taisho 14) on the middle of the slope as the terminal station of the Atami Line starting from Kozu Station. In 1934 (Showa 9), the Atami-Numazu section opened, and it became an intermediate station on the Tokaido Main Line. A commercial area has been formed on the winding road that descends from the station to the old town. The old town area is centered around Ginza Street, which was once a post town. The south side of the Ginza Street shopping district is a restaurant district, and the central district was the red line after the war. Atami Geisha Watch Station was located on Hatsukawa, and the entire hot spring town was a red light district, but the central district is located between the hot spring town and the commercial area. Also, in Nagisa-cho, near the coastline, there is the Nagisa Development Association, where postwar buildings line four alleys, and it looks like a blue line. On the other hand, if you go upstream along the Ito River, wooden townscapes remain. Atami is an interesting town to walk around and see as a modernized hot spring town.
