Berms and Swales 101: What They Are, What They Do, and When NOT to Use Them

Rocky, erosion-prone slopes are one of the most challenging landscapes to manage in Central Texas — and one of the most common. In this video, we walk through how we converted a nearly pure-rock hillside into a thriving agroforestry system using berms and swales, covering what they are, how they work, and — just as importantly — when you shouldn't use them at all. We get into the design decisions behind this particular site, how berms and swales compare to alternatives like brush berms, rock terraces, and one-rock dams, and how this system integrates into a broader agroforestry planting strategy for rocky Hill Country soils. A berm and swale system is not a one-time fix. Designed well and placed intentionally, it can build topsoil, recharge the aquifer, and produce food in conditions where most people wouldn't try.
