After months of dry weather in the UK, most of the country's rivers have been hard going when it comes to catching big fish like barbel this summer - and I knew it would likely be the same as I returned to Collingham on the tidal Trent for only the third time in my life. That didn't put me off, however, because the river was looking marvellous in its full summer splendour and the day ticket stretch run by Collingham Angling Association holds some very special angling memories for me. Not only that, but lots of special fish like big barbel and chub. My two previous Collingham trips over the last 12 months saw me land some huge barbel and smash my PB several times, so it was magic to revisit the river in the warmer months and explore some new pegs while staying overnight in a lovely Airbnb just outside the village. After a tough first day, I kept the faith and the fishing gods smiled down on me before it was time to pack up, leave the river and drive all the way back down to Surrey.
