HAND AND/OR WRIST INJURIES Explanation Hand and/or wrist injuries are common. Their functional consequences depend on the severity of the injury, as well as the quality of initial care and the rehabilitation program. Etiology (non-exhaustive list) 1. Tendon injury (e.g., laceration, tendinitis) 2. Nerve injury (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome) 3. Bone or joint injury (e.g., fracture, dislocation) Main Objectives In the case of a patient with a hand and/or wrist injury, the candidate will be required to diagnose the cause, severity, and complications, and to develop an appropriate management plan. Specific Objectives In the case of a patient with a hand and/or wrist injury, the candidate will be required to: 1. list and interpret crucial clinical findings, including those based on: a. a. a thorough history of the timing and mechanism of injury in cases of prior trauma; b. an appropriate physical examination including a neurovascular assessment; c. screening for risk factors for repetitive strain injuries, if applicable; d. history related to occupational and recreational activities; 2. list and interpret essential investigations, including: a. appropriate imaging of the affected bones and/or joints, as indicated; b. electromyography; 3. establish an effective and relevant initial management plan, paying particular attention to the following: a. referral of the patient to a specialist, if appropriate; b. involvement of other healthcare professionals, as needed; c. correct application of the intrinsic plus immobilization technique if splinting is required; d. adequate analgesia; e. Advice to be given to the patient regarding returning to work or play; f. consideration of possible long-term functional repercussions.
