BURNS Explanation Burns, a relatively common medical problem, are injuries to the skin or other tissues. Depending on their severity, they can be life-threatening or even fatal. Etiology (non-exhaustive list) 1. Thermal 2. Electrical 3. Chemical 4. Radiation Main Objectives When faced with a patient with burns, the candidate must determine the severity and treat any potential complications. In particular, they must implement the initial management of major thermal trauma. Specific Objectives When faced with a patient with burns, the candidate must: 1. Identify and interpret crucial clinical findings, including: a. the severity, depth, and extent of the burns; b. the risk of inhalation burns or other clinical problems associated with the burns; c. the patient's tetanus vaccination status; 2. Identify and interpret essential examinations, including laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging; 3. Develop an effective initial management plan, including: a. Resuscitating and stabilizing the patient, including administering appropriate intravenous fluids; b. Providing wound care; c. Providing physiological monitoring and pain management; d. Determining if the patient requires specialized care; e. Anticipating medium- and long-term complications (e.g., psychosocial effects).
