Fog often rolls in here, guaranteeing a fairy-tale atmosphere. We then walked through open fields and, in places, through sections of laurel forest 🌿. We followed the paid trails PR13 and PR6. After crossing the main road at Paúl da Serra, we walked across an open plateau and then entered a dark, quiet forest 🌿. After the forest, the descent began, and we soon found ourselves in a green paradise. This is an old trail that Madeira's residents used to travel between towns until the 1980s. After Portugal joined the European Union, money 💸 flowed in, roads were built, and people bought cars. Now these trails are maintained for hikers. Paid trail PR17. We stayed at — Valley View Hotel Encumeada — https://maps.app.goo.gl/na7rNUyXRbZLD... 🏔️ Day 3: Achada do Teixeira → Ilha This crossing goes through one of the most iconic mountain landscapes of Madeira. The stage begins with the legendary ascent of Pico Ruivo — the island's highest point at 1,862 meters — where a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the volcanic central massif awaited us 🌄. The main challenge of the day is the subsequent descent along PR1.1 toward the village of Ilha. This technical route transitions from high rocky ridges into a dense, foggy forest with ancient heather trees (urze). This fourth day of the journey took us through the true agricultural heart of northern Madeira, starting from the village of Ilha. It's a day of incredible contrasts: we went from lush terraced fields of mango and citrus trees to the harsh, scenic coastline of the Atlantic Ocean 🌊. Before highways cut through the landscape, this alpine climb from the coast — from Porto da Cruz to Machico — was for centuries the shortest, and therefore the most frequently used, route between the two settlements. Even today, the clifftop trail, high above the usually rough sea, has lost none of its wildness. This route is considered one of the most classic on the island. The route runs along a narrow volcanic peninsula where the island drops sharply into the Atlantic, so every turn reveals new wild panoramas: red cliffs, turquoise water, and rugged sea stacks.
