Disney, Hitchcock, Kurosawa: World Cinema in 1950

What was 1950 in the history of cinema? Dior was making costumes for a Hitchcock thriller. Rossellini & Bergman shot their first film together with a real volcano erupting in the background. And an Oscar went to a story published in Cosmopolitan – for a second year in a row. In this video essay, we’ll explore films from around the world released in 1950 – and a couple of movies that were later influenced by them. I illustrate all these stories with my own animations, all created in Blender. Let me know if you want a tutorial on any specific Blender trick. 00:00 – Intro 00:27 – Harvey and The Shawshank Redemption 01:29 – Cinderella 02:34 – Gerald McBoing-Boing 03:56 – Stage Fright 04:33 – Dietrich, Dior, and Princess Margaret 05:15 – Stromboli 06:17 – Rashomon 07:25 – The Last Duel 07:54 – Sunset Boulevard 08:21 – All About Eve 10:02 – This episode making of Main sources: Walt Disney: An American Original, by Bob Thomas Hollywood Cartoons: American Animation in Its Golden Age, by Michael Barrier 50 Years in the Mouse House, by Eric Larson Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in Fifties Animation, by Amid Amidi Dior by Dior, The Autobiography of Christian Dior Roberto Rossellini, by Peter Brunette Something Like an Autobiography, by Akira Kurosawa TIME, The New York Times, The Guardian The Academy Awards Database AFI Catalog of Feature Films ✨ Keyframes is my second personal animation project.
