Madame Bovary to go (Flaubert in 10,5 Minuten)
If YouTube had existed in 1856, the very dedicated Parisian prosecutor Ernest Pinard would surely have had a video made just like this one: MADAME BOVARY TO GO. Why? Well, he was the prosecutor in a trial against the author Gustave Flaubert, who was accused of writing an "immoral" and dangerous work with MADAME BOVARY. It was considered outrageous that Flaubert portrayed the infidelities of a doctor's wife in Normandy in a way that had never been done before: namely, quite neutrally and without condemning her—in other words, "realistically." Many passages were censored upon initial publication, but a scandal and the aforementioned trial followed—but in the end, the author prevailed, and his work became part of world literature. Michael Sommer and his Playmobil ensemble present a compact and entertaining version of this first realistic novel in French literature. As always, this to-go video is in no way a substitute for reading the original. My recommendation: Read it yourself!
