Ansichten eines Clowns to go (Böll in 10,5 Minuten)

"A clown who starts drinking falls faster than a drunken roofer falls." Hans Schnier does this out of a broken heart – and gives free rein to his hatred of stuffy Catholicism. SUMMER'S WORLD LITERATURE TO GO summarizes the anger of Heinrich Böll's "angry young man" in ten minutes. After Hans Schnier had sex with nineteen-year-old Marie Derkum at the age of 21, he traveled with her as a clown from gig to gig throughout the Adenauer Republic – until she recently left him after suffering a second miscarriage. Since then, Hans has been drinking more and more and injured his knee during a performance in Bochum – all further engagements are canceled, he doesn't have a penny left, and returns to his apartment in Bonn. There, he tries to find out where Marie is by phone and learns that she has married Heribert Züpfner, a politician and prominent member of the "Circle of Progressive Catholics," and is on their honeymoon in Rome with him. Hans argues with his parents, tries to organize money, and after only three and a half hours in his apartment, leaves with his guitar to sing for charity at the train station. "I not only suffer from melancholy, headaches, indolence, and the mystical ability to perceive smells through the telephone, my most terrible affliction is my predisposition to monogamy; there is only one woman with whom I can do everything men do with women: Marie." (Hans Schnier in VIEWS OF A CLOWN) Warning: THIS TO-GO VERSION DOES NOT REPLACE READING THE ORIGINAL. My recommendation: Read or play it yourself.
