You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands, devoting them to destruction, and yet you will escape.'" Hezekiah took the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went to the temple of the LORD and spread it before the LORD. Then Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, saying, "O LORD, God of Israel, who sits between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear! Open your eyes, O LORD, and see. Listen to the words of Sennacherib, which he sent to insult the living God. It is true, O Lord, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed nations and their lands. They have cast their gods into the fire, for they were no gods, but the work of human hands—wood and stone—and they have destroyed them. Now therefore, O Lord our God, deliver us from his hand! And let all the kingdoms of the earth know that you, O Lord, are God." Then Isaiah, son of Amoz, sent a proclamation to Hezekiah: "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib, king of Assyria. This is the decree that the Lord has pronounced concerning him: The Virgin, the daughter of Zion, despises and mocks you. The daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head after you. For a remnant will come out of Jerusalem, and a remnant of survivors from Mount Zion. The jealous love of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this! Therefore, thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not enter this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor shall he set up a shield against it, nor cast up a mound against it. By the same way that he came, he shall return, and he shall not enter this city, says the Lord. I will guard this city and deliver it for my sake, and for my servant David's sake. That same night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. So Sennacherib, king of Assyria, broke camp, returned, and remained in Nineveh.
