The city remained under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah's reign. In the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, when the famine was raging in the city and there was no food left for the people of the land, a breach was made in the city wall. All the warriors fled from the city by night through the gate between the double walls above the king's gardens. The Chaldeans were around the city. So they went out by the road leading to the Arabah. But the Chaldean army pursued the king and overtook him in the Jericho plain, and his entire army deserted him and was scattered. So they captured the king and brought him to Riblah, the king of Babylon, and pronounced sentence on him. Zedekiah's sons were killed before his eyes. The king of Babylon then put out Zedekiah's eyes and bound him with double bronze fetters. Then he carried him away to Babylon. Now in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month—which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon—Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, entered Jerusalem. He burned the temple of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem—all the great houses. The entire Chaldean army that was with the captain of the guard tore down the wall around Jerusalem. Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, carried into exile the rest of the people left in the city, the deserters who had gone over to the king of Babylon, and the remaining multitude. But the captain of the guard left some of the poor people of the land to work the vineyards and the fields. Matthew 8:1-4 When Jesus came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him.
