Nelson Piquet, on pole for Williams-Honda, led into La Source on lap one, but behind him chaos erupted. Ayrton Senna squeezed Gerhard Berger, who in turn forced Alain Prost into the barrier. Both Prost and Berger pitted for repairs, while Patrick Tambay's Lola retired on the spot after a collision. Keke Rosberg, forced to perform a full 180-degree turn to avoid the incident, also dropped to the back and eventually retired with engine failure on lap 6. Piquet led until his turbo failed on lap 16, handing the lead to Senna. Nigel Mansell, who had briefly spun on lap 5, methodically worked his way through the field. He overtook Senna and controlled the rest of the race with clinical precision, crossing the line in 1:27:57.925 — his first victory of the season and the third of his career, which he dedicated to the memory of Elio de Angelis, killed ten days earlier in a testing accident at Paul Ricard. Senna finished second, +19.8 seconds behind, followed by Stefan Johansson and Michele Alboreto for Ferrari. Prost salvaged a vital single championship point in sixth.
