Suspense - The Hitchhiker - September 2nd, 1942

Ronald Adams is a man embarking on what should be a routine cross-country drive from Brooklyn to California. However, his trip quickly descends into a psychological nightmare when he repeatedly encounters the same nondescript, rain-spattered hitchhiker on the side of the road across multiple states. Supported by a haunting, atmospheric score composed by Bernard Herrmann, Welles masterfully portrays Adams’ escalating dread and hysteria as he tries to outrun a figure that seems to defy the laws of space and time, culminating in a legendary twist ending that leaves listeners questioning the boundary between life and death.
