Hugó Scheiber was born on September 29, 1873, in Budapest, Hungary, during a time when the Austro-Hungarian Empire was a major European power. The Empire was a complex and multicultural entity, with Hungary being a vital part of its dual monarchy. This period saw significant social and political changes, including the rise of industrialization, which influenced the cultural landscape of the time. Scheiber came from a modest family background, which played a role in shaping his early life and aspirations. His father was a sign painter, which introduced Hugó to the world of visual art from a young age. This early exposure to craftsmanship and the visual aspects of his father's work laid the foundation for his future artistic endeavors. However, the family’s financial situation was precarious, limiting Scheiber's opportunities for formal education and exposure to high culture in his formative years. Growing up in Budapest, Scheiber was influenced by the city's vibrant cultural scene, which was marked by a blend of traditional Hungarian art and the burgeoning modernist movements from Western Europe. Hungary, like much of Europe at the time, was experiencing a shift in artistic expression, with movements such as Impressionism, Expressionism, and later, Futurism, challenging traditional artistic norms. Despite his family's financial struggles, Scheiber pursued his passion for art. He initially worked as an apprentice sign painter, following in his father's footsteps, but he was determined to expand his artistic horizons. He eventually enrolled in art school in Budapest, where he studied under notable Hungarian artists.
