Luncheon of the Boating Party Luncheon of the Boating Party (French: Le Déjeuner des canotiers) is an 1881 oil painting by French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Exhibited at the Seventh Impressionist Exhibition in 1882, it was praised by critics and identified by several as the finest work in the show. The painting was purchased by dealer Paul Durand-Ruel and later acquired in 1923 by Duncan Phillips. Today, it is housed at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. The work combines portraiture, still life, and landscape in a single composition. It depicts Renoir’s friends relaxing on the balcony of the Maison Fournaise restaurant along the Seine in Chatou, France. Among the figures are Aline Charigot, Renoir’s future wife, playing with an affenpinscher; Gustave Caillebotte seated in the foreground; actress Ellen Andrée; Charles Ephrussi; and members of the Fournaise family. The diagonal railing divides the composition, contrasting a crowded gathering with a more open space. Renoir masterfully captures flickering light streaming through the balcony opening, reflected by white clothing and the tablecloth. The richness of form and fluid brushwork reveal possible influence from Paolo Veronese’s The Wedding Feast at Cana. Celebrated for its vitality and warmth, the painting remains one of Impressionism’s defining masterpieces.
